Creating Play Spaces

Embracing the interests of our children goes well beyond INVITATIONS.  When we notice our children are incredibly interested in a certain subject, we do our best to create entire spaces in our PLAYROOMS dedicated to that interest – these spaces stay up for days, weeks, and even months.  They allow our children to delve deeper into their play and curiosities.

We have always used REAL TOOLS in our play – modeling and guiding our children to navigate these tools safely.  Today we replaced our LIGHT PANEL AREA with a tool/workbench space.  The light panel is still accessible and the tools have been around for a while and had a previous home on one of our activity trays.  Now, however, there is an actual creative space dedicated to building with tools.

Thnak you for all your post. I check in every so often to see what’s new. I have been trying to get smaller REAL tools for my 6 year old. Do you have any suggestions?

He is 5, but he has been using real tools since he could crawl….and by “using” I mean – he was allowed to explore them and we helped him use them when he was very young – even age 2. I think in our POWER TOOL TO PUMPKIN post he is 2 yrs old….or a newly turned 3 year old, and he is using a drill.

Thank you for your amazing inspiration!

I am trying to create our pegboard storage set up for light table play right now and am having a hard time finding storage accessories. Could you point me in the right direction? I love your set up!
